MiteBiter/Russian Queen cross
I firmly believe that if we are to rid our bees of the Varrora Mite, it will be done by enabling the bees to do it themselves. Miticides are a short term solution causing, long term problems. They are not the answer.
Creating a strain of bees that are immune is the answer. Both the Purdue Ankle Biter (VSH) and the Russian honey bee are resistant. I believe they are each resistant using different mechanics. I will be doing many breeding experiments by crossing Russian queens with Mite Biter drones and Mite Biter Queens with Russian drones. These hybrids will be available and should provide exceptional mite resistance. Further testing and evaluation will determine how much resistance they have Update January 2022 After many attempts at this II (instrumental insemination)cross, it was finally made last summer by Kyle Booker from Redding. I produced 24 daughters from the Booker cross and gave them their own colonies to head and take thru the winter. 20 of them are still alive and thriving. I think this is an exceptional survival rate considering I'm sitting at about a 40-45% loss so far this winter. Their temperament, production and vigor was very good. So far their overwintering is well above my overall average. I will monitor their spring buildup and swarminess as they grow in the California Almonds, and when they come home in late March. More extensive testing needs to be completed on their managing of mites, and will be completed throughout the spring and summer. The Booker cross queens will be available this spring. Kyle Booker is going to attempt to inseminate more Breeders this spring. If anyone is interested in inseminated queens, or custom crosses, get a hold of me and I will put you in contact with him. |
